Freeform writing. How do you start writing about absolutely nothing. Well its not nothing it’s about taking a subject, unimportant or important, and just writing. Now this isn’t as easy as it may seem. First, how do you come up with a topic and then how do you continue that topic for long enough to make a substantial in-roads into a body of work.
As you might have guessed this is a bit of free-form writing. I am using it to tackle a bit of writers block. Some might say that free-form writing is procrastinating in itself. I would disagree. Well I would have to wouldn’t I. It is sometimes hard to come up with a way of writing on a particular topic. I find that it can help to just write and start getting soemthing down on paper. In so doing you practice, you exercise those writing muscles that would otherwise sit idle.
The brain as a muscle. Like any other it needs regular exercise in order to keep it in tip-top shape. Leave it to long on the sofa, feeding it a diet of Glee and X-factor juts leads to it getting flabby and Slow. I find free writing not only a great exercise for helping overcome writers block, but also as a general tool for exercising my brain. It helps maintain my focus.
One of the other tools I use to help in my free writing is a website called 750words.com which aims to encourage writers to put 750 words down on paper each day. With points and scoreboards it leads to the gamification of writing. It also gives a constant word count. This is important. its like a nudge. I will write 750 words …. ohh I’m only at 293 words that means I have to keep going to reach my target. It appeals to my competitive edge.
