I don’t know what made me think about it but I got to wondering what area of the country we would need to cover with wind turbines in order to satisfy the UK’s energy need….
uk electricity needs…
UK is 244,820 sq km in area
1 square kilometer = 1 000 000 square meters
As a guide, Corrie Mountain Windfarm (4.8 MWh) consists of eight 600 kW Vestas Wind Turbines (42 metre rotor diameter) and occupies an area of approximately 40 acres.
4520834 Turbines occupy 45208333acres which is 182 951 634 096 m2
As a percentage of the country that a measly ….
74.73% of the area of the uk
Simply put….wind can never completely eliminate our need for fossel fuels….and yet the Government and Scottish Parliament keep trying to push the current level of usage up as though its actually going to change anything.
